Every year, the employees at TEC Benefits dedicate a day to giving back to the community. On Friday, May 18th, 2018, TEC Community Day took us to the Pine Valley Camp, located amid the verdant forests of Ellwood City, PA. Pine Valley Camp is a summer camp that aims to, “create camps where at-risk youth will encounter God’s creation, loving community, and the gospel of Jesus Christ.” Executive Director, Mr. Matt, and his wife, Miss Susan, started the camp 21 years ago. Through donations, children who might not otherwise be able to experience camp receive scholarships to attend, only paying a small registration fee. In order to keep Pine Valley Camp operating and beautiful, they rely on a small staff and the work of volunteers. That is where TEC stepped in.
In the weeks leading up to the opening of the camp for summer, there is much work that needs to be done. The TEC team was split up into smaller groups to complete tasks best suited to their abilities and interests. One team was tasked with assembling donated pool furniture that was missing some pieces as well as the directions for assembly. Another team put their painting skills to use, painting the posts and trim of the pool house. Finally, a third group applied stain to the playground, stairs, and a deck.
While we were certainly all tired, hot, and covered in paint by the end of the day, the feeling of accomplishment and contributing to a good cause, coupled with the team bonding experience, left the TEC staff smiling.
